There have been numerous rumblings lately regarding surfing NZ. Lot’s of folk are ready for a change at the top.
Gary Elkerton recently wrote an open letter to the New Zealand surfing community.
The Sunday Star Times today ran an article quoting Craig Hughes from Raglan and his thoughts on how President Bruce Scott is acting. It’s an interesting read.

I was surfing at Lyall Bay last Wednesday and out comes the local stand-up guy from the stand-up craze. It was painful surf to start with, as there was a good sized swell but a new bank that doesn’t really handle the high-tide (not many waves to go around). I’ve experienced domination from these stand-ups before and it was not looking good for everyone else in the water.
Next thing, I was in priority and saw myself being snaked for a bomb due to the paddle-boarder racing out past me and spinning around to get in early. I wasn’t going to let this slide like most of the other surfers who let ‘the corner’ get completely dominated by these paddle boarders (the same rules should apply to everyone regardless of how fast they can paddle and how early they can get on a wave). So I paddled for ‘my’ wave and he ran me over, bruising my ankle and claiming it was my fault? Huh?
Surfers, especially the ones at ‘the corner’. Make sure you stick up for your right to the wave you are in prioritiy for. Don’t be bullied by these dangerous paddle-boards supertankers.

I was just interviewed by a 17 year old high school geography student about my views on the proposed Lyall Bay artificial surf reef. He seems to be gathering opinion on either side of the debate.
When it comes to artificial surf reefs, what are your thoughts? Are you in favour of them or not? And if not why not?
It’d be great to hear what a broad cross-section of surfers actually think of these fake reefs! Further, if you have surfed one and truly rate it let us know. Show us the photos.

The Wave Box is a new start-up in Auckland… the worlds first continuous wave!
There have been numerous attempts at building artificial surf reefs and the like. It seems they have so much compliance to wade through that this kind of approach might be a way to get around all that.
Fancy that, surfing in boardshorts and warm water in July, without having to get on a plane!

Go you good thing go!
There’s some interesting stuff to read about on their site. Check it out!
